ZCode
Zhipu AI · · Coding harness
Z.ai released ZCode, a free desktop 'agentic development environment' built around GLM-5.2, on macOS, Windows and Linux, with bring-your-own-key support for third-party models and a 1.5× quota bonus for GLM Coding Plan subscribers.
Why it matters
The point a Chinese lab stopped competing on model price and started competing on the harness. Z.ai pitched ZCode directly against Cursor, Claude Code and Copilot and gave the app away to pull developers onto its own coding subscription — the same distribution play Google made with Gemini CLI, run by a lab whose model was the cheaper one.
This is LLM World's historical reading, not a claim by Zhipu AI. The facts above and the sources below are what it rests on.

Record status: partly verified · confidence 60/100
Dated by the South China Morning Post, published 6:00pm 2 July 2026, which says Z.ai 'on Wednesday introduced ZCode' — Wednesday of that week is 1 July 2026. Z.ai's own announcement is an X post ('Introducing ZCode, the official development environment for GLM-5.2'), which could not be read because x.com blocks automated fetches, and venturebeat.com returned 403. One caveat found in secondary coverage and not resolved: ZCode's public changelog reportedly shows the app iterating since around 26 June 2026, so 1 July is the announcement, possibly not the first public build. Company recorded as Zhipu AI to match this dataset; the product ships under the Z.ai brand.
