Trae, ByteDance's AI IDE

ByteDance · · Coding harness

ByteDance shipped Trae, a VS Code fork with an AI builder mode, free to use and running on other labs' frontier models (Claude 3.5 Sonnet and GPT-4o) rather than ByteDance's own.

Why it matters

The first AI-native development environment from a major Chinese platform company, and the earliest Chinese entry in the coding-harness race. Like Manus a month later, it competed on the harness while renting the model, which is the pattern Chinese agent products followed until their own coding models caught up.

This is LLM World's historical reading, not a claim by ByteDance. The facts above and the sources below are what it rests on.

Record status: partly verified · confidence 50/100

The weakest entry in this batch. 20 January 2025 is stated by several aggregators and repeated across coverage, and Visual Studio Magazine covered the tool as newly shipped on 27 January 2025 — but I could not read a ByteDance page carrying the date. trae.ai's blog index returned no dated posts to an automated fetch, and visualstudiomagazine.com returned 403, so its dateline is from the URL path rather than the page. There is also a real ambiguity the entry does not resolve: the international Trae launched first and a separate Chinese-market build followed later in 2025, and the aibase article used here describes the Chinese-developer version while carrying a January date. Confirm against a ByteDance announcement before publishing.
