Tongyi Lingma unveiled

Alibaba Qwen · · Product launch

Alibaba Cloud unveiled 通义灵码 (Tongyi Lingma), a coding assistant built on its Tongyi code model, at the Apsara Conference in Hangzhou, demonstrating it generating a hundred-odd lines of Python from a one-line request. It supported Java, Python and Go with generation, chat, unit-test generation and code explanation, and the individual tier was free.

Why it matters

Alibaba's entry into the Chinese Copilot generation, and the direct ancestor of everything Alibaba later shipped in this space: the Lingma team became Qoder, and Lingma IDE now carries a Qoder CN banner. It is the assistant a Chinese lab kept iterating on longest before replacing it with an agentic product.

This is LLM World's historical reading, not a claim by Alibaba Qwen. The facts above and the sources below are what it rests on.

Record status: partly verified · confidence 65/100

Dated by an Alibaba Cloud developer-community article published 2023-10-31 and headed '2023云栖大会 | 阿里云推出智能编码助手通义灵码', which states the unveiling happened that day at the Hangzhou Apsara Conference; GeekPark carried the same date on 2023-11-02. Held at partially_verified rather than verified because developer.aliyun.com accepts community-submitted posts, so authorship as an Alibaba Cloud announcement could not be confirmed from the page itself. Alibaba's own Lingma documentation gives no launch date: the current Lingma IDE changelog starts at v0.1.0 on 2025-05-29 and links the pre-2025 log only as an archive ('原通义灵码日志(存档)') that could not be read. NOTE the wording is 展示 ('demonstrated/unveiled'), not general availability. COMPANY: recorded as Alibaba Qwen to match this dataset's only Alibaba string; the product ships under the Alibaba Cloud / Tongyi brand, not the Qwen team.
