Kimi Code CLI rewritten and re-released

Moonshot AI · · Coding harness

Moonshot AI republished Kimi Code CLI as a new MIT-licensed repository, rewritten from Python to TypeScript, installable without Node.js, with coder, explore and plan subagents that run in isolated contexts. It migrates the configuration and sessions of the older Kimi CLI it replaces.

Why it matters

The subagent-with-its-own-context pattern arriving in a Chinese first-party harness, and a relicensing from Apache-2.0 to MIT that removed the last friction from redistributing it. Moonshot's own framing — 'the starting point for next-gen agents' — positions the harness, not the model, as the product.

This is LLM World's historical reading, not a claim by Moonshot AI. The facts above and the sources below are what it rests on.

Record status: partly verified · confidence 55/100

The date is the published_at of the earliest GitHub release on Moonshot's own MoonshotAI/kimi-code repository (tag @moonshot-ai/kimi-code@0.2.0, 2026-05-26T07:04:28Z); the repository itself was created 2026-05-22, which is not used. MarkTechPost reported the release on 6 June 2026, eleven days later, and Chinaz covered a 'major version upgrade' on 9 June 2026 without giving a date. Moonshot published no announcement post I could find, so there is no company statement of a launch date — only its own dated release artifact. NAMING TRAP: the name 'Kimi Code CLI' was applied to the older Python kimi-cli in January 2026, so a reader searching that name will find two projects and two dates; this record is the TypeScript rewrite, and the separate kimi-cli record is its predecessor.
