Baidu Comate opens for invited testing
Baidu · · Product launch
Baidu Intelligent Cloud unveiled Comate, a code assistant built on the Wenxin (ERNIE) model, at a Wenxin large-model technical conference in Chengdu and opened it for invited testing. It covered around 30 languages, and Baidu claimed roughly a 50% acceptance rate for its suggestions in internal use. Baidu gave it the Chinese name 文心快码 (Wenxin Kuaima) on 2024-06-28.
Why it matters
The first coding assistant shipped by a Chinese hyperscaler on its own foundation model, three weeks after GitHub Copilot Chat's own beta and four months before Alibaba's equivalent. It marks the start of the Chinese Copilot generation — completion and chat inside an editor, not an agent — which is the baseline everything in the 2025 Chinese harness wave was built against.
This is LLM World's historical reading, not a claim by Baidu. The facts above and the sources below are what it rests on.

Dated by same-day Chinese media on 6 June 2023 — a Tencent News piece published that day reports 百度智能云推出「Comate」代码助手,并正式开放邀测 ('Baidu Intelligent Cloud launched the Comate code assistant and formally opened invited testing'), corroborated by IT之家 the same day and by Baidu Baike's product history, which gives the fullest chronology (internal tool April 2023, invited test 2023-06-06, commercial Comate X 2023-08-18, general availability 2023-10-24, renamed 文心快码 2024-06-28). Baidu Baike is user-editable and is cited only for that chronology, never as the basis for the date. What is missing is Baidu's own dated announcement post: comate.baidu.com carries the product but no launch date, and no Baidu newsroom item for the date could be read. SCOPE: this dates the invited beta, not general availability, which the same chronology puts at 2023-10-24.
